AI receptionist · Wollongong

Wollongong tradies: a narrow strip between the escarpment and the sea.

Everything here sits between the escarpment and the water, and a lot of it needs a geotechnical report before anyone digs. Receptly answers every call you can’t, knows the Illawarra suburbs and the NSW rules, and books it in.

The Wollongong problem

Long and thin, one road at each end, and a phone you can’t reach

The Illawarra is a ribbon. Helensburgh at one end, Kiama at the other, Mount Ousley and the Princes the only real ways in and out, and the escarpment pressing everything against the coast. A job in Helensburgh and a job in Shellharbour are the same city on paper and an hour and a bit apart in a ute. You need to know where a call is before you commit to it, and on the tools you’re not finding out.

The work splits too. Heavy industrial around Port Kembla, escarpment blocks in Bulli, Thirroul and Austinmer where slope stability is a planning matter, and new estates spreading through Dapto, Albion Park and Shell Cove. Three different sets of questions and one voicemail that asks none of them.

Geotech firstWollongong’s own planning controls say most development on escarpment land needs a geotechnical report. The receptionist asks where the block is before you’re quoting a retaining wall.
Port KemblaBlueScope’s steelworks covers 760 hectares and supports around ten thousand jobs in the Illawarra. Industrial and contractor calls behave nothing like domestic ones.
Sydney Water, not Illawarra WaterWollongong’s mains are Sydney Water’s on 13 20 90. Electricity is Endeavour, not Ausgrid. The receptionist gets that right first time.

Local knowledge

It knows the Illawarra

It’s set up for Wollongong before it takes a call. Not a generic script with the city name dropped in: the suburbs, the 02 numbers, the way work is spread, and the things a caller from Wollongong will ask.

  • Where along the strip It asks the suburb and works out the run: the northern villages (Helensburgh, Stanwell Park, Coalcliff, Austinmer, Thirroul, Bulli, Woonona), the city and inner (Wollongong, North Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Figtree, Mount Keira, Keiraville, Gwynneville), the south (Unanderra, Berkeley, Warrawong, Port Kembla, Dapto, Kanahooka), and the Shellharbour and Kiama end (Albion Park, Shell Cove, Shellharbour, Oak Flats, Kiama, Gerringong). You set how far up and how far down you’ll go.
  • Escarpment blocks If the job is a retaining wall, a new build, a pool, an extension or drainage on a sloping block in the escarpment suburbs, it asks the address and notes that council planning controls generally require a geotechnical report for escarpment land. It gives no ruling on any particular block, because that’s an engineer’s call. It just puts the question on the table before you price it.
  • Industrial and contractor calls Port Kembla and the industrial estates ring differently to a homeowner: a purchase order, a site induction, an outage window, a safety contact. It asks for those up front and routes contractor calls wherever you want them, so they don’t sit in the same list as a blocked toilet in Corrimal.
  • Who to ring when it’s not your job No water in the street is Sydney Water on 13 20 90, the twenty-four hour faults line rather than the business-hours number. Wires down or the whole block dark is Endeavour Energy on 131 003, not Ausgrid. A gas smell is Jemena on 131 909. Storm damage and trees down are the SES on 132 500. It sends them there first and still takes their details for you.

NSW rules

The NSW rules it respects

Licences

Plumbers, electricians and builders in the Illawarra are licensed by NSW Fair Trading. The receptionist reads out your number when a caller asks, never claims one you don’t hold, and never promises a certificate it can’t issue.

Recording calls

NSW is an all-party-consent state under the Surveillance Devices Act 2007. Every call opens with a short announcement that it’s an automated receptionist and the call is recorded. Details in our call recording disclosure.

Quoting

It doesn’t quote. Escarpment work in particular can’t be priced before someone’s looked at the slope and the drainage. It captures what you need to quote properly and tells the caller you’ll confirm.

How it works

One call. We do the rest.

  1. One call with usWe’re in Sydney; setup is a phone call wherever you are. We learn how you run: the jobs you take, the suburbs you cover, what’s urgent, what gets quoted.
  2. Your number stays the sameKeep the number on the van. Calls you don’t pick up in a few rings divert to the receptionist.
  3. Live within the weekWe listen to the first month of calls and tune it. Anything it can’t handle, it takes a message and texts you.
